Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) should be dropped off at a HHW depot and NOT put into a landfill. HHW can injure waste collectors and can damage the environment if disposed of improperly. HHW must NOT be poured down the drain or storm sewer.

The City of Winkler has a HHW depot located at 345 1st Street (Public Works Yard). Citizens from surrounding communities are asked to use this depot as well.

HHW is usually labeled as corrosive, explosive, poison or flammable:

Common HHW items include:

• Acids (rust remover)

• Aerosol cans (full of partially full)

• Automotive liquids (antifreeze, motor oil and filters, fuels)

• Batteries (household and car & single-use/disposable)

• Bleach

• Pressurized Cylinders less than 20lbs
  (propane tanks, acetylene, carbon dioxide, expanding foam, fire extinguishers, Freon, helium, oxygen)

• Fluorescent Lights (compact bulbs and tubes)

• Gasoline

• Household Cleaners, Bleach, Pool Chemicals

• Paints and Stain Varsols/Solvents (full or partially full)

• Pesticides, Garden Chemicals, Fertilizers

• Pharmaceuticals & Cosmetics
  (nail polish & remover, perfume, lotions, make-up, shampoo, body wash, etc.)

• Mercury Containing Devices
